Sempra Energy built Energía Costa Azul, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) receipt terminal and related facilities about 15 miles north of Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. The $975 million LNG receipt terminal has the capacity to process up to 1 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas per day, with room for expansion. Energía Costa Azul is the first new LNG receipt terminal on North America's west coast. Commercial operations began in May 2008.

Energía Costa Azul has secured a site with access to deep coastal waters that can be developed consistent with state and local government land use planning efforts, and is far removed from any residential areas. The project has received all required permits.
