About LNG community safety & Environment About us News

Natural gas is an important factor for the development of countries that have strong economies and people who enjoy good living conditions. Guaranteeing a sufficient supply of natural gas in Baja California is a matter of tremendous importance for the future economic development of the state.

The Mexican government has selected natural gas as the cleanest fuel to run the new power plants, such as the two new projects in Mexicali, as well as transforming existing plants such as the Rosarito power plant.

CleanSafePractical
Natural gas is 2.6 times cleaner than fuel oil, which is currently used by power plants and industries in Baja California; plus it doesn't produce soot. Natural gas is non-toxic; it is odorless and colorless, it's 65% lighter than air, which makes it dissipate rapidly. Natural gas can be transported and distributed directly to the end consumer through pipeline systems, which means continuous and efficient energy service.

Where does natural gas come from?

Natural gas is a fossil fuel extracted from the ground that can be used as a source of energy for household, industrial and commercial use, as well as to generate electricity.

Baja California doesn't have its own natural gas reserves and it is isolated from Mexico's supply system. Currently Baja California imports all the gas it consumes from the United States, through pipelines.

How can Baja California ensure a reliable and competitive supply of natural gas?

Baja California must obtain natural gas from several sources and not depend on just one. To be able to have a viable and efficient alternate supply requires the construction of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) receipt terminal, which allows shipments to be received from faraway regions that have large reserves of natural gas, such as Bolivia, Peru, Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia.
