LNG Storing Tanks

Storage tanks at Energía Costa Azul were built in adherence to Mexican regulations, which in some cases are more stringent that similar regulations in the US.

These structures were built based on a total containment engineering design that offers two levels of safety and protection. Inside the total containment tanks, LNG is stored in controlled climate containers with extremely efficient wall insulation, similar to a thermos. The controlled climate container is enclosed in a second container made out of cement.

The total containment tanks have double walls. An internal 9%-nickel stainless steel sheet is surrounded by a cement wall that is almost one meter in thickness. If the internal steel wall were to have an imperfection, the external concrete tanks would contain the LNG.

Safety Industry and Government Standards

Industry and government standards establish specifications for cement and steel used in construction, valve design, pumps, tanks, compressors, refrigeration piping, tank insulation, fire extinguishing equipment, and for seismic activity protection, among other factors.
